How to Calculate Your Binance Futures Liquidation Price

· About 9 min read · CoinPath Editorial Team

What Is the Liquidation Price

The liquidation price is the price level at which your futures position is forcibly closed by the exchange because your margin can no longer sustain the losses. When the market reaches your liquidation price, you lose all (or nearly all) of the margin allocated to that position.

Every futures position has a liquidation price that is calculated at the moment the position is opened. This price is displayed in your open positions panel and updates if you add or remove margin from the position.

Understanding and monitoring your liquidation price is arguably the most important risk management practice in futures trading. Your liquidation price determines the maximum adverse price movement your position can survive.

Simplified Liquidation Price Calculation

While the exact liquidation formula is complex (accounting for maintenance margin rates, funding fees, and other factors), the simplified calculation provides a useful approximation.

For long positions: Approximate Liquidation Price = Entry Price x (1 - 1/Leverage + Maintenance Margin Rate). At 10x leverage with a 0.5% maintenance margin rate and 60,000 entry: Liquidation is approximately 60,000 x (1 - 0.1 + 0.005) = 60,000 x 0.905 = 54,300.

For short positions: Approximate Liquidation Price = Entry Price x (1 + 1/Leverage - Maintenance Margin Rate). At 10x leverage with 60,000 entry: Liquidation is approximately 60,000 x (1 + 0.1 - 0.005) = 60,000 x 1.095 = 65,700.

The key insight: at 10x leverage, your long position can sustain roughly a 9.5% drop before liquidation, and your short can sustain roughly a 9.5% rise.

How to Check Your Liquidation Price

Binance displays the liquidation price for each open position in the Positions tab of the futures trading interface. It is shown alongside other position details like entry price, position size, margin, and unrealized PnL.

The displayed liquidation price is the precise calculation performed by Binance's liquidation engine, accounting for all relevant factors. Always use this displayed price rather than manual calculations for actual trading decisions.

Strategies to Avoid Liquidation

Use lower leverage. The most direct way to push your liquidation price further from your entry. Reducing leverage from 20x to 10x roughly doubles the distance to liquidation.

Set stop-losses well before the liquidation price. Your stop-loss should trigger long before liquidation would occur. A general rule is to set stops at a level where your loss is a predetermined percentage of your total account, not where liquidation would happen.

Use isolated margin. Isolated margin limits your loss to the allocated margin for that specific position. Cross margin can draw from your entire wallet, which may seem protective but risks your entire balance on a single position.

Add margin proactively. If the market moves against your position and you believe in the trade, adding more margin pushes the liquidation price further away. However, only do this as a deliberate decision, not out of desperation to avoid a stop-loss.

Monitor margin ratio. The margin ratio (displayed in the futures interface) shows how close your position is to liquidation as a percentage. Keep it well below 80% under normal conditions.

Conclusion

Your liquidation price defines the absolute maximum risk of your futures position. Monitoring it, understanding how leverage affects it, and implementing strategies to keep it safely distant from the current price are fundamental practices for successful futures trading.
